Symptoms of genital dermatoses

Genital dermatoses vary in type and symptoms, and some conditions can look alike. Some common symptoms of genital dermatoses can include one or more of the following symptoms:

Penile melanoma

Pain or soreness around the genitals or surrounding area

Difficulty when urinating (including pain or burning sensations)

Sores, blisters, or ulcers

Skin discolouration (particularly if it is recent)

Dry, crusty, or flaky skin

Abnormal discharge (whether in amount, colour, odour, or texture)

Pain during intercourse

How our genital dermatology works

Many people often feel embarrassed when discussing genital skin conditions, however, if left untreated the condition can worsen. Our dermatologists will often prescribe topical treatments such as:

  • Soap substitutes to avoid dry skin and reduce irritation.
  • Paraffin-based moisturisers to help soothe the skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory creams and anti-fungal medication to mitigate inflammation and infection.

During diagnosis, our dermatologists will examine the affected area and conduct further tests where necessary to confirm the diagnosis. These tests can include swab tests, blood tests, or a skin biopsy.

Meet our genital dermatoses expert

Dr George Kravvas is a GMC-registered consultant dermatologist and dermatological surgeon. He studied medicine and philosophy at King’s College London and subsequently trained as a dermatologist in Edinburgh, Bristol, and London.

His specialist interests include skin cancer and moles screening, skin surgery, inflammatory skin diseases such as acneeczema, and psoriasis, and male genital skin diseases.

He is actively involved in skin-related research and has authored multiple publications on important dermatological topics. Currently, he is also undertaking a postgraduate medical research degree (MD Res) at UCL, on the topic of male genital lichen sclerosus, male genital pre-cancer, and cancer.
