What causes acne?

Hormonal changes during puberty increase the sebum production by the oil-producing glands in the skin. In most people with acne, hormone levels are normal, but the glands are highly sensitive to the hormones.

Acne can also flare up before the menstrual period. Sometimes it can be triggered by a problem with the hormones, like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can affect females. It can also be aggravated by external factors, such as oil-based skin care products, certain contraceptive methods and hormonal treatments and stress.

Some studies have found that foods with a high glycaemic index, such as sugary foods, white bread, potatoes and white rice, can aggravate acne. There is a weak evidence that milk can cause acne in some people.

Can acne be cured?

While there is no definitive cure for acne, although there are available treatments, which can be very effective. We work with our acne patients on an individual level to continually provide the best course of treatment.
