Initial Consultation

Reassessment
If the initial treatment plan become ineffective, it will be reassessed and a new treatment plan will be recommended so that the most appropriate treatment is always in place.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that is often characterized by patches of thick red, white or silvery skin. It is commonly found around the elbows, scalp, hands, feet, knees and lower back areas. Psoriasis can also affect the genitals or skin folds, such us the groin or under the breasts. It can make the nails look pitted, brittle, thickened or detached from the nail bed. It can also be related to psoriatic arthritis, which causes joint pain and swelling.
What Causes Psoriasis?
The exact reason for psoriasis is not currently known but research suggests it could be linked to a combination of immune, genetic and environmental factors. It is not contagious. The immune cells cause an accelerated skin cell growth, because the top layers of the skin grow very rapidly and stop shedding properly. Certain environmental factors can aggravate psoriasis. These include bacterial and viral infections, alcohol, stress, skin damage and certain medications. Smoking and obesity can make it more resistant to treatment.

Types of Psoriasis
There are several forms of psoriasis that can occur, these are
Chronic Plaque
This is the most common form of psoriasis and often appears on the elbows, knees, back and scalp. Symptoms include pink or red skin inflammations and thickened plaques with white scale.
Flexural
Characterized by raw, red areas in the groin, genitals, armpits or under the breasts.
Guttate
It is a form of psoriasis that causes small scaly patches or spots. It can be related to a streptococcal throat infection.
Erythrodermic
Erythrodermic psoriasis is a severe form of psoriasis that causes widespread skin redness.
Palmoplantar Pustular
This form of psoriasis is characterized by inflamed spots on the palms and soles that are typically filled with pus.
Pustular
Pustular psoriasis is the most severe form of psoriasis and takes the form of red, tender skin lesions that are filled with pus spots or blisters.
