Why should you get moles checked?

While moles are extremely common and most will likely never cause health problems, it is still important have your skin and any new moles checked regularly. New moles or even changes in existing moles could a sign of melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Melanoma is the fifth most common type of skin cancer in the UK, but the sooner it is caught and treated the better the outlook of recovery is.

How do our moles checks work?

Patients will receive a systematic full body dermoscopy examination and, if required by your Consultant Dermatologist, digital dermoscopic images will be taken of lesions for monitoring purposes or if they are concerning.

Our Consultant Dermatologists use the latest technology, personally examine the patient and select which moles need to have more detailed monitoring. From here, a course of treatment can be chosen that best suits your needs.

If you are worried about moles or lesions, seek medical advice as soon as possible. You can book a consultation at the Skin Inspection Clinic Now

When should you get checked?

The ABCDE rule covers changes that might indicate a melanoma. This can help you to self-examine.

A

Asymmetry

One half of the mole doesn’t match the other

B

Border

The edges may be irregular

C

Colour

Uneven colour

D

Diameter

Most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter

E

Evolving

When a mole starts to change. Any change – in size, shape, colour, elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting – can be suspicious

The poorest prognosis is most often that of nodular melanoma, which can escape the ABCDE rule by being symmetrical, with regular borders and homogeneous colour, and often being only about 6mm in size. That’s why we recommend combining self-examination with dermatologist visits for melanoma prevention and early detection.
