What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition often characterised by thick patches of red, white, or silvery skin. It commonly appears on the elbows, scalp, hands, feet, knees, and lower back. Additionally, psoriasis can cause nails to become pitted, brittle, thickened, or detached from the nail bed. It may also be linked to psoriatic arthritis, which results in joint pain and swelling.

Psoriasis affects people of all ages and can be found around the elbows, scalp, hands, feet, knees, and lower back areas. While the condition itself isn’t curable, there are treatments that can be used to keep the symptoms controlled.

Types of psoriasis in children

There are several forms of psoriasis that can occur, however some forms are more common in children. The symptoms of the condition can also present themselves differently in children, for example children are more likely to have psoriasis on their face or around joints.

The most common types of psoriasis in children are:

  • Plaque psoriasis – Most children who suffer from psoriasis have plaque psoriasis. It causes red, dry patches and silvery scales. The plaques or scales typically appear on the knees, elbows, lower back, and scalp.
  • Guttate psoriasis – Also known as “drop-like” psoriasis, It causes small red dots on the truck, back, arms, and legs. This type of psoriasis is often triggered by a strep infection. Many children who suffer with guttate psoriasis also get plaque psoriasis.

Psoriasis causes itchy dry patches on the skin. In 40% of cases symptoms appear before the child is 16 years and 10% see symptoms before the age of 10. Common symptoms of psoriasis include:

  • Pink or red patches of skin.
  • White or silvery scales.
  • Itching or soreness around the affected areas.

Most cases of psoriasis go through cycles, flaring up for a few weeks or months before easing or stopping.

How Do We Treat Psoriasis?

Our treatments can come in the form of creams, foams, lotions, phototherapy, or oral medication. The treatments that are recommended can vary on a patient by patient basis depending on the clinical history and severity of the symptoms that are presenting.

If your child is suffering from psoriasis, don’t hesitate to contact us and book a consultation with our dermatologists to discuss your treatment options.

While the exact cause of psoriasis isn’t known, the condition is often triggered for the first time in children by other conditions such as a bacterial infection or strep throat. In other cases, children can have genes passed on from their parents that make them more likely to have psoriasis.

However, there are certain things that can increase the likelihood of a child getting psoriasis such as:

  • Being obese.
  • Certain medications.
  • Cold weather.
  • Cuts, scratches, sunburn, or rashes on the skin.
  • High levels of stress.
