What is Contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema skin condition which is triggered when the skin is in contact with a particular substance that you are allergic or irritant to. Eczema is the broad name of conditions which cause the skin to become irritated, itchy or dry.

Contact dermatitis is an itchy, red rash that is caused when the skin has been in contact with the substance that you are allergic to, such as cosmetics, fragrances, jewellery and plants. Once the initial contact, the rash can show up within minutes, hours or within a day.

The rash caused from the reaction can take up to 2 to 4 weeks to clear, depending on the severity of the reaction. In most cases, the rash clears within 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are two different types of contact dermatitis and these are irritant and allergic.

Irritant contact dermatitis: This is the most common type. This nonallergic reaction occurs when an irritant damages your skin’s protective layer.
Allergic contact dermatitis: This occurs when you are in contact with a substance that you are allergic to. This triggers your immune system to react with the area that first came in contact with the allergen.

Contact dermatitis is caused when your skin is in physical contact with a substance that you are allergic to, this could include:

  • Solvents
  • Rubber or latex products
  • Bleach
  • Detergents
  • Hair products
  • Soap
  • Fragrances
  • Airborne substances
  • Plants
  • Pesticides
  • Chemicals
  • Medication
  • Nail polish
  • Paint

When your skin is in contact with a substance it is allergic to, your immune system responds. Your skin may swell or become inflamed and this is a sign that your blood white cells are responding to the allergen or irritant.

To relieve the symptoms of contact dermatitis, you can do the following:

  • Use steroid creams that contain topical steroids
  • Use ointments that contain topical steroids
  • Take medication that reduces swelling, itching, or fight a bacterial infection

Additionally you can also do the following to prevent contact dermatitis from affecting your skin:

  • Avoid contact with the irritant once you have identified what this is
  • Apply anti-itch creams and ointment to the affected areas
  • Apply wet and cool compresses to the affected areas
  • Protect your skin by covering the affected areas to prevent further damage
  • Take a cool bath to relieve the rash or itch
  • Protect your hands by regular washing and moisturising

Our expert team of dermatologists will discuss and clearly explain your treatment options as well as their recommended course of treatment for your specific case of contact dermatitis.

It is recommended to treat contact dermatitis as soon as possible as the rash can get itchy and painful if irritated further. Additionally, early treatment can prevent the rash from spreading further around your body.

Once the rash has formed, you should not touch this as you may cause it to spread to different parts of your body, once in contact with the rash, you should wash your hands thoroughly and avoid direct contact with your eyes and face.

No treatment can also lead to you being disrupted during the day and night from the irritation of the rash.

Ensuring you receive the correct treatment will help you relieve the symptoms of the skin condition and ensure your skin is in good health.

On average, contact dermatitis lasts between 2 – 4 weeks but should heal within 2 weeks. It is rare for this skin condition to last longer than 4 weeks.

Our professional dermatology clinics are located throughout London, including Harley Street, Amersham, Beaconsfield, Berkhamsted & Woking.
