What is a Cyst?
A cyst is a fluid-filled lump that appears just beneath the skin. Cysts can vary in size from small than a pea all up to a few centimetres in diameter. A cyst will also, typically, grow slightly over a period time.
In many cases, cysts are benign and harmless. However, it can often be difficult to determine whether a lump is a cyst or something that requires treatment. If you’re unsure it is recommended that you seek medical advice to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Types of Cysts
There are two primary types of cysts, these are epidermoid cysts and pilar cysts. However, if you’re unsure if your skin lump is harmless cyst, please contact a medical professional. Epidermoid cysts tend to appear on the face, neck, trunk or genital area. Pilar cysts form around hair follicles and are commonly found on the scalp.
Why remove a cyst?
While most cysts are harmless and often do not need treatment unless they become infected or cause discomfort. If they get infected, you may need a course of oral antibiotics.
The removal of a benign cyst is a common procedure. People with benign cysts can sometimes find that they have a negative impact on their self-esteem which can influence their decision to have it removed.
How Does Cyst Removal Work?
Local anaesthetic is injected to numb the skin. Then, the cyst would be cut out and the skin would be repaired using stitches. The procedure leaves a scar.
