What is Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis?

Juvenile plantar dermatosis is a common chronic dry skin condition that affects the feet, it is most commonly found in adolescent children. This condition can also be known as atopic winter feet, or forefoot dermatitis. Boys are more likely to develop this skin condition compared to girls and it is most common between the ages of 3-14, with the strong majority of cases occurring between the ages of 4-8 years old. However, it can develop or be present into the early stages of adulthood.

Children who also have eczema will also have a higher risk of developing plantar dermatosis.

Juvenile plantar dermatosis occurs as shiny, red patches on the weight-baring surfaces of the feet. The affected skin can be tight, but smooth and painful cracks in the skin may be present. You may also feel like your feet are sweaty, however the skin can be very dry and scaly.

The most common areas for this condition are as follows:

  • On/around the big toe
  • On/around the ball of the foot
  • On/around the heel of the foot

Other symptoms include:

  • Scaly skin
  • Painful cracks around the toes and ball of foot

Plantar dermatosis skin condition can be caused by the following factors:

  • Repetitive frictional movement
  • Wearing covered footwear and synthetic shoes such as nylon and vinyl
  • Wearing socks made from synthetic materials
  • Sweating and drying which leads to cracking
  • Genetic skin sensitivity
  • Climatic changes which are heightened during the summer months due to increased sweating

  • Wearing cotton socks
  • Regularly changing socks to prevent sweat build up

Why Do We Treat Juvenile plantar dermatosis?

Although this skin condition is usually and can be pain-free, it is recommended to have a consultation to prevent the condition from worsening or any pain developing. If you have cracks in the skin, this can be incredibly painful and can lead to an infection if not treated or protected correctly.

Ensuring you receive the correct treatment will help you relieve the symptoms of the skin condition and ensure your skin is in good health.

On average, juvenile plantar dermatosis resolves by puberty with the average lifespan of the condition being between 2-4 years.
