Roaccutane is a brand name for Isotretinoin which is a retinoid drug that is a part of the same family as Vitamin A. It targets the underlying causes of acne to help achieve clearer and smoother skin. It is effective on numerous types of acne including nodular and cystic acne, acne that is causing scarring or doesn’t clear with antibiotics.
Roaccutane is available in doses of 10mg or 20mg soft capsules which are usually taken once a day with a meal. Results can be seen within a week to 10 days after starting treatment, with a course usually lasting around six months, but may be longer.
The dosage and length of treatment that is right for you will be agreed during your consultation.
If you’re looking for Roaccutane therapy treatments, don’t hesitate to contact us and book a consultation with our dermatologists to discuss your options.
Roaccutane treatment decreases the production of sebum, a natural oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. It also unblocks the pores by reducing the production keratin.
Roaccutane isn’t suitable for everyone and normally is only prescribed after alternative methods of acne treatment have failed. We will complete a thorough consultation to ensure that the treatment is right for you. But you cannot take Roaccutane if:
Isotretinoin can cause serious harm to the development of a baby and increases the risk of miscarriage. Women should avoid pregnancy during isotretinoin treatment and for a month after stopping.
Whilst Roaccutane is highly effective, as with all medicines it comes with potential risks and side effects. Some common side effects of Roaccutane include dry skin, eyes, nose or lips, rashes, or mild itching, sore or dry mouth or throat, headaches, or back pains and aches. It can also raise the liver enzymes and increase the blood fat levels. These side effects usually resolve after stopping the treatment.
Other less common side effects are nose bleeds, temporary hair loss, vision problems, a serious allergic reaction, especially reduced night vision, feeling weak, liver inflammation, headaches, or gut problems. Isotretinoin has been associated with mental health problems in some people, but research has not shown if isotretinoin is the cause. Some people experience low mood, anxiety, depression, or aggressive behaviour. The side effects of Isotretinoin treatment will be discussed thoroughly before you are given the medication and you will be closely monitored to manage any potential reactions.
Once you have completed your Roaccutane treatment you should see a significant improvement in your skin. We will review your skin upon completion to see how it has responded and whether any additional treatment is required to manage acne or scarring going forward.
