Phototherapy

Professional phototherapy treatments from expert dermatologists in London.

What is Phototherapy?

Phototherapy is a nurse-led treatment and is sometimes also referred to as light therapy because the treatment includes an ultraviolet (UV) light which helps treat certain skin conditions as well as certain types of cancer and precancer. The affected area of skin is exposed to a UV light for a period of time, shutting down the immune system cells that caused the condition by an overreaction.

How does Phototherapy Work?

Phototherapy works by reducing growth of skin cells and treating underlying inflammation by exposing the skin to an Ultra Violet (UV) light for a certain amount of time.

The UV light will shut down the immune system cells that are on an area of skin affected by certain types of skin conditions that are caused by the overreaction of the immune system.

Such as eczema or psoriasis for example. By stopping the immune system cells, phototherapy helps to ease the symptoms and reduce the appearance of these conditions.

Who can have Phototherapy?

Anyone can have phototherapy treatment if they have been recommended to have phototherapy by a healthcare professional. Children and adults can use this form of treatment, it’s even used in some newborn jaundice cases. However, there are certain factors that can affect whether light therapy is recommended for you and it’s important to let your professional know if:

  • You have a sun allergy.
  • Have had skin cancer in the past.
  • You are pregnant or nursing
  • Have liver disease.
  • Have lupus.
  • Have a genetic disease that makes you more prone to damage from the sun, for example, xeroderma pigmentosa.
