What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic therapy (or PDT) is a method of treating various types of skin cancer and precancerous lesions such as basal cell carcinoma as well as areas of sun damaged skin that could become cancerous in the future. During PDT treatment, a cream is applied to the area that is to be treated. A special light or daylight is then used to activate the cream.

If you’re looking for photodynamic therapy treatments, don’t hesitate to contact us and book a consultation with our dermatologists to discuss your options.

How does PDT Work?

Photodynamic therapy works by killing any abnormal skin cells that are present in the affected area. The cream used in PDT contains a chemical that, when applied to the affected skin, becomes light sensitive. This chemical is known as “photosensitiser” and activates when exposed to visible light such as daylight or the blue/red light used in the clinic.

Once activated, the photosensitiser causes the skin to become inflamed and, once the inflammation has cleared, the affected skin will have either been cured or seen improvement. It is important to note that only areas of skin that are exposed to, both, light and the PDT cream will be treated.
