What are warts & verrucae?

Warts are harmless, small bumps on the skin with a rough and uneven surface, similar to tiny cauliflower formations. They can appear alone or in groups on different parts of the body. Warts can be a pale colour or slightly darker than the surrounding skin, and some might have tiny black dots due to blocked blood vessels. Verrucae, also known as plantar warts, are a specific type of wart that occur on the soles of the feet, often causing discomfort or pain when walking.

Why remove a wart?

An individual may opt for wart removal for various reasons, such as aesthetic concerns, alleviating discomfort, or preventing further spread. Warts, particularly those in visible areas, can cause self-consciousness due to their appearance. Moreover, warts located on high-friction areas like the bottom of the foot or near joints can cause discomfort during daily activities. Removal of warts can minimize the risk of spreading to other body parts or transmission to other individuals through direct skin contact.

How are warts removed?

There are different types of treatment options, but none are completely effective. These include:

  • Applying something directly onto the wart (topical treatment).
  • Cryotherapy – Most effective for smaller warts, cryotherapy involves spraying liquid nitrogen onto the affected area causing the wart to blister and fall off within a few days.
  • Electrocautery – This treatment involves numbing the affected area and burning off the wart. This treatment leaves a wound that can take around 2 weeks to fully heal.
  • Surgery – This is more helpful for larger warts or those that have withstood other treatment methods surgery is often the best option. A surgical removal involves numbing the area and then shaving the wart off.
