Moles Check

Why should you get moles checked?

While moles are extremely common and most will likely never cause health problems, it is still important have your skin and any new moles checked regularly. New moles or even changes in existing moles could a sign of melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Melanoma is the fifth most common type of skin cancer in the UK, but the sooner it is caught and treated the better the outlook of recovery is.

How do our mole checks work?

Patients will receive a systematic full body dermoscopy examination and, if required by your Consultant Dermatologist, digital dermoscopic images will be taken of lesions for monitoring purposes or if they are concerning.

Our Consultant Dermatologists use the latest technology, personally examine the patient and select which moles need to have more detailed monitoring.  From here, a course of treatment can be chosen that best suits your needs.

When should you get a mole checked?

There are a number tell-tale signs that you should get a mole checked such as:

  • When two halves of the mole look irregular or are not matching with each other.
  • If you notice that the edges are blurred or notched.
  • If the colour of the mole isn’t the same all over, this could be black or brown with patches of red, white, blue or, pink.
  • If the mole has a width that is more than 6mm across.
  • If you have noticed a change in the shape, size, or colour of the mole.
  • If the mole has been bleeding, weeping fluid, or has become painful or itchy.

If you have noticed any of these symptoms please give us a call on +44 (0) 20 3575 1474 to book a consultation with one of our specialist skin cancer dermatologists.
